The Effect of Using STAD Cooperative Learning Model Assisted with the Student Worksheet on the Students' Mathematics Conceptual Understanding and Problem Solving Ability in Class VII of MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan

Synopsis

This research was conducted based on the facts showing that the students’ learning achievement especially on mathematics conceptual understanding and problem solving ability in MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan was low. The learning process which was still teacher-centered was assumed as the cause of this problem. To deal with the problem, STAD cooperative learning model assisted with the Student Worksheet was applied.

The aim of this research was to reveal the effect of applying STAD cooperative learning model assisted with the Student Worksheet on the students’ mathematics conceptual understanding and problem solving ability in class VII of MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan.

This was a quasi experimental research which applied quantitative approach. The population of the research was the students studying in MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan registered in Academic Year 2013/2014. As the sample, class VII.A was chosen as the experimental class, and class VII.B was taken as the control one. The instruments of the research were a pre-test to see whether the students have high, medium or low previous knowledge, and a post-test to measure the students’ mathematics conceptual understanding and problem solving ability. The data obtained was analyzed by using t-test, t’-test and Mann Whitney U test.

The result of the research indicated that: 1) mathematics conceptual understanding and problem solving ability of the students taught by using STAD cooperative learning model assisted with the Student Worksheet was better than that of students taught by using conventional learning in class VII of MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan, 2) mathematics conceptual understanding of the students having either high, medium or low previous knowledge taught by uisng STAD cooperative learning model assisted with the Student Worksheet was better than that of students taught by using conventional learning in class VII of MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan, 3) mathematics problem solving ability of the students having either high, medium or low previous knowledge taught by using STAD cooperative learning model assisted with the Student Worksheet was better than that of students taught by using conventional learning in class VII of MTs Negeri Tarusan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan.
